With the realization that the customer is the king; most of the bigger companies have decided to have a call center to cater to their customers. The call centers are used either for addressing customer grievances or for marketing services. Where companies are unable to set up their own call center, they hire the services of outside agencies. External call centers some times are hired for a specific promotional purpose only and their services are terminated once the promotion is over. Some companies source out their customer service on a long time basis but when their operations prolongs, they are then forced to set up their own call center to cut costs. Having their own call center means they could have full control over the operations of the call center in a way that is in tune with the overall strategy of the company.
The working hours of a call center varies depending upon the type of call center and the service it offers. Some call centers offer 24 hours service; the service may be either by telephone, chat or the internet. There are other call centers that offer services at fixed hours; outside these hours they are not available. There are also call centers that work as telemarketing services only. These call centers operate during the day so that they can target the home market. There are other call centers that attend to customer inquiries only; while there are some that does both the work.

You get to speak and contact with an assortment of people, ranging from the good, the bad and the ugly; who can bring some amusing moments in a day’s work. In the bargain you do not get to feel bored at doing a repetitive job day after day.
The wages vary from one call centers to the other. The system of wages is also different in different call center. Some call centers have lower wages but offer high incentives and bonuses; some pay higher basic coupled with promotional incentives; while some call centers work more on commission basis than basic pay. You can choose the one that fits your temperament
Call center job has it own downside. You have to talk endless hours with endless customers, spending your day endlessly at the desk. It’s not that customers who call are friendly all the time. There are times when you have to hear four-letter words even; and in such cases you have to keep your cool and do everything the satisfy the customer. If you try to give as good as you get, you are going to be fired. You should be able to take things sportingly and not take things personally.
Some call centers offer good growth prospects. If you like challenges and adventure, you can work in a call center; be it in sales or customer service or telemarketing, you can grow career-wise and make money as well.
